2009 Clos Du Mont-Olivet ‘Varene’

vareneI’ve always liked the “regular” Mont-Olivet CDR, so was eager to try this particular cuvee, labeled ‘Varene.’ A syrah-dominant blend, this wine offers the sort of rustic fruit wallop that only Europe can do at this price point.

For something like $18, this is a seriously classy red wine, both rustic (ie, not full of new oak) and full of delicious red fruit. It is, as people who rarely drink wine inevitably describe wine they like, “very smooth.”

This wine would make a great gift, and you’d be seriously welcome at my house if you came bearing it.
