2005 Clendenen Petit Verdot

clendenenPetit Verdot is gaining favor as a varietal in Virginia, but this is the first I’ve seen or tasted of a 100% PV from  California.

So, I’m always in favor of drinking seeming out of place or eccentric bottlings, and this Clendenen Petit Verdot certainly fits the bill. The bonus, in this case, is that it’s really pretty good.

This reminds me a lot of polished California Zin with the acid cranked up a few notches. There’s definitely some toasty oak in here, but the fruit, like the acid, is very bright. In fact, it’s remarkable just how bright considering this bottle is about 8 years old.

There’s no sense that anything is fading here, and you’d have to think this could go another decade. A successful experiment.

Drink this with food.
